iPhone 5C now $50 cheaper from Best Buy – Limited-time offer

Alexandra Burlacu

Best Buy is offering a promotional discount for the iPhone 5C, slashing out $50 off the handset's price via store gift cards.

In other words, the heavyweight retailer is offering $50 store gift cards for customers to put toward the purchase of a $100 iPhone 5C.

Apple's new iPhone 5C has only been on sale for a couple of weeks and it comes as a more budget-friendly version of the company's brand smartphone. It is not as cheap as initially expected, but it is nonetheless more affordable than the high-end iPhone 5S. The lower-priced version also comes with a plastic casing instead of the metal design Apple used for all of its other iPhones.

According to a new ABC News report, Best Buy will be offering the plastic iPhone 5C with a $50 gift card, which would effectively bring down the cost of the device to $50.

Moreover, the retailer is reportedly extending this promotional offer to the Samsung Galaxy S4 as well, which normally costs $199. The special deal aims to draw interest to these specific devices, a company spokesman told ABC News.

The higher-end iPhone 5S, meanwhile, which launched alongside the iPhone 5C, is not part of Best Buy's promotion. If the strategy is indeed aiming to drive traffic to the handsets, it would make sense why the iPhone 5S is not included. The new flagship has proved to be very popular with consumers and it reportedly outperformed its plastic-shelled sibling in terms of units sold.

The two new iPhones saw a record 9 million unit sales during their launch weekend. Apple has not given a breakdown of that figure for the two handsets, but the iPhone 5S was in highest demand.

The iPhone 5C will reportedly be available with the $50 gift card from Best Buy only for a very limited time. More specifically, the offer stands only through Sunday, Oct. 6. The promotional deal is not available online, however, which means that interested iPhone shoppers looking to take advantage of the big-box retailer's offer will have to make a trip to one of Best Buy's brick-and-mortar stores.
