LG G Flex to launch next month with 6-inch flexible display, press renders leak

Alexandra Burlacu

LG has already announced plans to launch a flexible display smartphone and now renders of the purported LG G Flex have emerged online.

The smartphone will reportedly make its debut next month, sporting a massive 6-inch curved display.

The press renders of the upcoming LG G Flex smartphone with a bendable display come from Engadget, which learned from its tipsters that the handset will launch next month.

"Engadget has come across a trio of renders of the upcoming device, and we have learned from our sources that it will be coming out sometime next month - pricing and availability (as well as hard specs) are as of yet unknown, however," reports the publication.

When it comes to the curve of the device's display, the leaked press renders show that LG's G Flex will sport a different approach from Samsung's flexible-display smartphone. While the Samsung Galaxy Round curves from side to side, the LG G Flex will apparently curve from top to bottom.

The specs of the device are still a mystery for now, but the G Flex is rumored to feature a 1080p full HD display and the latest Snapdragon 800 processor on board.

"LG Display is launching a new era of flexible displays for smartphones with its industry-leading technology," LG Display Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Sang Deog recently said in a press release announcing that the company has started mass-producing its flexible display for smartphones.

"The flexible display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices. Our goal is to take an early lead in the flexible display market by introducing new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year."

The press release offers a vague timeframe of "next year" and Engadget points to a release next month, which would obviously be sooner than expected. On the other hand, LG's press release came out just before Samsung officially announced its Galaxy Round smartphone with a flexible display. In other words, there is a possibility that LG initially planned a launch for next year, but pressure from the competition made it speed things up.

However, the company has yet to confirm the G Flex unveiling for next month, which means that it's still in the rumor state for now. Engadget is typically a reliable source, but it is advisable to take all leaks, rumors and speculations with a grain of salt until it becomes official. In the meantime, check out the press renders and let us know what you think.
