Google Nexus 5 official: Top specs & features aside from killer $349 price tag (unlocked)

Alexandra Burlacu

This Halloween has been no trick and all treat when it comes to Google, as the company has officially unveiled its Nexus 5 smartphone running on Android 4.4 KitKat.

The new Nexus 5 from LG and Google has got to be one of the most poorly-kept secrets, but this doesn't make it less impressive. The new flagship is a notable improvement over its predecessor, the Nexus 4, sporting top-notch specs and features and a jaw-drop price tag starting at $349 for the unlocked device.

As expected, Google made its big unveiling on Thursday, Oct. 31, introducing a smartphone that's thinner, lighter, with a larger screen and a bigger camera lens compared to its predecessor.

Display

The hotly-anticipated Nexus 5 boasts a 4.95-inch display with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and an impressive pixel density of 445 pixels per inch (ppi). For the sake of comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has 441 ppi, while Apple's latest iPhone 5S comes in at 326 ppi. The Nexus 5's display also comes with Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Processor

Under the hood, the new Nexus 5 packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, with a bonus core that lets users handle certain tasks while the rest of the device is asleep, which helps conserve battery life. The 2GB of RAM should also help things go smoothly.

Camera

Other top specs include an 8-megapixel rear shooter with optical image stabilization (OIS) and Google touted that the camera's new lens can capture more light for brighter images in low-light settings and sharper action shots. Moreover, a new HDR+ mode will automatically snap a rapid burst of shots and combine them into a single image for the best possible capture. The front camera, meanwhile, is still a 1.2-megapixel lens just like the Nexus 4's.

Connectivity

The good news doesn't end here. The Nexus 5 finally brings LTE support for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, as well as HSPA+ bands, GSM, CDMA, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and Qi wireless charging. Verizon, however, is out of this party.

Pricing

If the high-end specs and the very latest version of Android were not enough, Google offers the whole package for a very affordable price tag. The 16GB Nexus 5 costs $349, while the 32GB model goes up to $399. Both versions are already available for purchase in a choice of black or white, unlocked.

Availability

The Nexus 5 is available unlocked from the Google Play store in the U.S., Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, and Korea. According to Google, the smartphone is "coming soon" to India, with more countries set to follow afterwards.
