Amazon wearable tech store now up and running – Gadgets for all

Apr 30, 2014 07:13 AM EDT

Wearable tech is shaping up to be a very lucrative market that is growing by the day, and Amazon just jumped in with a dedicated store.

Smartwatches, fitness bands, and other such gadgets all fall under wearable tech, a growing space with lots of potential. More heavyweight companies are expected to join the party this year and the stakes are high in this segment. Even without a wearable gadget of its own, Amazon jumped onboard and opened up a new branch of its online warehouse that will deal exclusively with this flourishing segment.

Amazon's new web storefront is the go-to place for customers looking for a smartwatch, activity camera, wearable camera, smart wristband, and other types of wearable technology. The store already has big-brand products from Samsung, Jawbone, GoPro, as well as less-known brands such as Narrative and Misfit, which hold great potential.

Because not everyone is tech-savvy and up to date with all things tech, the new Amazon store also has a learning center dedicated to educating buyers on the different categories of wearable tech. This learning center even has videos so customers can learn about wearable technology and make educated choices.

"Wearable technology is an exciting category with rapid innovation and our customers are increasingly coming to Amazon to shop and learn about these devices," Amazon director of Wireless and Mobile Electronics, John Nemeth, said in a press release.

The wearable technology trend is just starting to gain momentum and Amazon wants a piece of this pie even if it doesn't have its own device to join this growing trend. The Pebble Steel and the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 gadgets are already at a more advanced stage, but the segment is nonetheless in its beginnings still. This year is expected to mark important progress in this area as more companies will enter the market with their own products.

Apple and Google are expected to launch their own wearable tech devices soon, but it remains to be seen whether Amazon will join the race with a device of its own. Even if it doesn't, setting up a dedicated wearable tech store is a smart move for the e-tailer and will likely be very successful, as it makes it easier to find just what you need in this area.
