Windows 10 Continuum for Phones delivers desktop PC experience on your phone (VIDEO)

Microsoft just offered some neat details on its Windows 10 Continuum feature for phones, which will allow users to enjoy a desktop experience on their phone.

The company's latest OS version, set to roll out this summer, aims to work as an universal platform that will be coming to desktop PCs, tablets, and smartphones alike.

The highly-anticipated Microsoft BUILD 2015 developer conference kicked off on Wednesday, April 29, in San Francisco, and the company offered more details on various key aspects of the highly-anticipated Windows 10.

Among several other exciting news, Microsoft detailed the Windows 10 Continuum feature for phones, which will enable a smartphone to serve as a portable desktop PC by instantly adapting its interface.

Microsoft's Continuum feature already allows devices such as the Surface Pro to deliver a seamless transition between laptop and tablet modes, but Continuum for phones now takes it to the next level. When Windows 10 is ready to roll out this summer, Continuum will allow phones to deliver a desktop PC experience.

In order to achieve this, users would need to connect their phone to a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and hook up a monitor via an HDMI cable (or wirelessly, when possible). When Microsoft's Joe Belfiore did this in an on-stage demo at the conference, the user interface (UI) of the mobile device automatically adapted at once to the new inputs and outputs.

Not just any Windows phone, however, will be able to deliver a desktop PC experience with this neat Windows 10 Continuum feature. Next-generation Windows phones that will ship with Windows 10 on board later this year will have the necessary hardware to fire up a second display, but until then we'll have to wait.

With this in mind, it will be interesting to see the neat capabilities future Lumia devices will have to offer with Windows 10, especially since Microsoft is expected to launch a high-end flagship later this year. Microsoft has long been looking to get a bigger share of the highly-competitive smartphone market, and new software features included in Windows 10 for phones may give it the boost it needs.
