Facebook employees to experience slow internet through 2G Tuesdays

2G internet connection is so old school and seems like it has long ceased to exist in today's world. But for some people in other parts of the world, particularly those that are still emerging in terms of technology, 2G is already the standard connection available. With this in mind, Facebook is yet making another attempt to improve. This time, the attempt is to have their employees undergo or experience this 2G connection.

Facebook is now planning to start having 2G Tuesdays. The said move is to teach their employees what it would be like to have slow internet speed and on the process help should help them understand what it is like to have internet connection like that in India, the rest of Asia, as well as Africa.

According to Facebook's engineering director Tom Alison, the difference was jarring at first. It has definitely tested his patience and he felt like parts of the product were broken. Alison says that this, however, will help their engineers see places where they will need to improve their product and will also help them see the areas where they have improved a lot.

The 2G Tuesdays is an opt-in option though. The plan is for every Tuesday when a Facebook employee logs in, they will be asked on their news feed whether they want to try the 2G connection or not. If the employee does indeed decide to do so, they will experience the connection for about an hour. That experience will give them the opportunity to give feedback on what works well with the said connection and what doesn't.

Although an hour seems nothing in comparison to what it is like to have your internet that slow daily, Facebook is hoping that this hour will at least help the employees understand better and develop new Facebook feeds adapted to audiences having no 4G internet connection and provide the best experience for them.
