Windows 8 to Launch in October

Mar 20, 2012 09:33 PM EDT

Windows 8, the latest version of Microsoft operating system, will reportedly be completed by this summer and hit the market in October, according to Bloomberg.

The Redmond-based company plans to bring personal computers, tablets and other mobile devices together through Windows 8. The strategy is similar to what Apple has done with its OS X and iOS operating systems.

The report also suggested that the initial roll out of Windows 8 will take place on devices running Intel and ARM chipsets - the same as iPad's processors.

Windows 8 will launch in October, which allows Microsoft to target Christmas shoppers with the new software working with different devices.

Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Stamford, Connecticut-based Gartner Inc. said that “If they miss the September-October time frame, they’re going to be stuck without being able to ship anything in 2012.”

“The last thing Microsoft wants to have is a situation where there are no compelling Windows tablets at a time when the new iPad looks like it’s going to be a good seller for the holidays,” Gartenberg added.
