Toyota Supra: Everything We Know So Far

With the life of the BMW Z4 reaching its end, BMW and Toyota have teamed up on a new sports car. To recall, Toyota did not have a successor to the iconic Supra which was discontinued a decade and a half ago, so when the two known auto giants come together to make an all new sports car - it is definitely something worth waiting.

Both have remained largely silent on the progress of their joint venture which would see a new Toyota Supra, not being clear on whether it will be Japanese or German. However, a few leaked pictures of the vehicle have been published in Auto express.

The prototype seems to be shorter than that of Z5 and not heavier than the Z4. With a hard top and a long bonnet, it is widely believed that the Supra would be more or less offered as a coupe. According to the Road and Track, the New Toyota Supra would come fitted with a six engine from the powertrain stable of BMW. Hybrid-electric technology would also come into the picture to boost the performance. This would also rule out the manual transmission in the vehicle.

The new sports car in all likelihood would be using electric motors on rear and front axle .Electric power generated from regenerative braking would be stored possibly in a lithium ion battery. The petrol engine would be driving the rear wheels.

The new sports car could be also be implementing Toyota's first-ever dual-clutch transmission technology. This should aid the high-performance engine.

With Toyota and BMW tying up, this could mean that there are lesser development costs and a great setup in the technology front. The Toyota Supra is expected to be launched around BMW Z5 with Z5, probably out by late 2017. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming sports car.
