President Of South Korea, Park Geun-Hye, Has Been Impeached! [VIDEO]

Dec 10, 2016 09:58 PM EST

Park Geun-hye is the first woman elected as the 11th President of South Korea. However, the president was just impeached last Friday by the nation's National Assembly with six weeks of protesting in the streets and an approval rating that dropped to just 4%.

The impeachment vote against Park Geun-hye required at least 28 votes from the President's fellow Saenuri Party officials to make up the majority of the country's 300-seat legislature. Park was suspended with immediate effect due to the final tally of votes: 234 in favor of Park's impeachment, 56 against, 7 invalid, and 2 abstaining. However, the Constitutional Court still needs to confirm this within 180 days for it to become permanent.

Park was accused of sharing classified documents with her acquaintance, Choi Soon-sil. Choi has been charged with the use of influence over Park Geun-hye to extort money from some of South Korea's biggest companies such as Samsung and Hyundai. The money amounted to approximately $70 million.

Park was constitutionally protected from prosecution other than treason or civil disobedience, although prosecutors said that Park played a substantial role in Choi's alleged indiscretion. Once Park leaves the position, loads of criminal charges will be waiting. An apology was made by Park countless of times and insisted that it was not personal.

Park will be permanently removed from the position if six of the nine judges find the impeachment justifiable. After which, Korea will have 60 days to elect a new President. However, if less than six judges think that the impeachment made is not justifiable, then Park will immediately return and retain power over South Korea.

South Korea's Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn will temporarily take over the position and responsibilities of Park Geun-hye. Nonetheless, Park will be presented as resigned if officials voted against her.
