NVIDIA's Volta GPU (graphics processing units) is likely to take the supercomputing realm by storm. The NVIDIA Volta Architecture will be reportedly based on the 12nm FinFet technology in order to compete with the AMD Vega Architecture as well as Intel's "Knights Hill" processor.
The Volta 30 series GPUs flagship GTX 3080 is expected to come equipped with HBMS memory, which is comparatively faster than the GTX 1080. The rumor mill has been churning out a slew of speculations surrounding the arrival of NVIDIA Volta GPUs. The latest buzz around the upcoming GPUs suggests that the newfangled architecture will be considerably different from Pascal compared to the dissimilarities between Pascal and Maxwell.
If recently surfaced reports are anything to go by, the NVIDIA Volta architecture will employ the 12nm FinFet technology, which is designed by TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). Despite the lack of an official confirmation to back this claim, the new technology seems to be an obvious choice for NVIDIA if the company plans to have an early release.
NVIDIA initially pushed for 10nm process node; however, this could be featured in upcoming versions of the Volta GPUs, which could even boast the 7nm technology. Moreover, TSMC warrants a considerable 20 percent performance boost compared to the current generation 16nm process in Pascal.
The California-based chip maker is leaving no stone unturned in the bid to gear their Volta Architecture. It is the company's flagship GPU, with everything it needs to compete with Intel and AMD.
The Volta Tesla GPU will lock horns with "Knights Hill" processor, which is slated to arrive next year as well as the deep-learning "Knights Mill' Xeon Phi processor that is expected to hit store shelves at the end of 2017, according to Top500.
AMD's Vega GPUs are likely to make an appearance before both Intel as well as NVIDIA. Moreover, the new Radeon Instinct line for deep learning may also be on the verge of receiving an upgraded version of the FirePro GPU.
Aside from Volta's contribution in AI and deep learning, the Volta gaming GPUs are also capable of providing jaw-dropping gaming experience. The next-generation will comprise the Volta 30 series since the 20 series will merely be refresh alternatives of Pascal GPUs, SegmentNext reported.
The flagship GTX 3080 is expected to come with the HBMS memory, which is faster than the GDDR5X featured in the GTX 1080. A high-end iteration, the GTX 3080 Ti, could be in the offing as well following the 1080 Ti and a mid-ranger GTX 3070.
The NVIDIA Volta GPUs is not associated with a release date at the moment; however, rumors are rife about an impending debut. More concrete details about the latest architecture are likely to surface in May during NVIDIA's GTC (GPU Technology Conference).
