60 Million Windows 8 License Sold To OEMs And Consumers To Date

Windows 8 seems to be slowly climbing up the ladder as Microsoft announced that it has sold 60 million licenses of the new operating systems to OEM and those who upgraded their PCs to date.

The data was shared by Chief Financial and Marketing Officer for Windows, Tammi Reller, via the JP Morgan Tech Forum at CES 2013 on Jan. 8. It's an impressive feat for an operating system that has been deemed a failure by some. This number should rise with the overabundance of new Windows 8-based devices coming in 2013.

Tammi Reller also stated that Microsoft has exceeded the 60 percent deployment mark of Windows 7. This means Windows 8 will have a hard time surpassing Windows 7 to become the number one Windows operating system. This feat can only happen if users who are on the fence about Windows 8 come across that touch based-device they find fitting to make the switch, or if Microsoft release an update that fixes some of the problems with the operating system that does not agree with potential users.

At CES this week, OEMs came out gunning with quite a lot of Windows 8-based computers including a massive 20-inch tablet beast from Panasonic that supports 4K resolution. The first AMD tablet to run Windows 8 has also been announced by the likes of Vizio, along with the Chronos and Ultra devices from Samsung.

It is clear now that PC makers are taking Windows 8 seriously and are willing to create great hardware to draw consumer attention. Windows 8 should gradually increase in sales and market share as 2013 progresses.
