PlayStation 4 Could Feature Dual Camera Supported EyeToy To Compete With Kinect

It is highly rare to see the upcoming PlayStation out of news, and that trend, as it seems, will continue for a while, at least until there’s some kind of official confirmation about the next generation console.

Per reports, Sony’s next generation PlayStation 4 console, among all other features expected to arrive with it, is said to feature a new dual camera EyeToy to compete with Microsoft’s Kinect.

Sony is quite aware about the kind of success Microsoft has achieved with its Kinect compatibility after its release, and is now said to introduce something similar to its own gaming console to reap the benefits from the popularity of such a technology.

The EyeToy, basically, is a color digital camera device, similar to a webcam, for the PlayStation 2. The technology makes use of computer vision and Gesture recognition to process images taken by the camera. The EyeToy is also compatible with the PlayStation 3 and can be used for purposes such as video chatting.

“The Kinect has helped demonstrate excitement for this style of input, and with the help of companies like Intel the technology is growing at breakneck speed. For these, and many other reasons, it makes perfect sense that Sony would want to go all out with the PS4 and push the EyeToy into the same arena as the Kinect, likely at the expensive of Move’s wand-based control scheme,” Geek.com states.

The dual camera EyeToy for the next PlayStation, if true, could be an impressive addition to the console, “especially with the recent AR storybook additions.” However, as compared to the Kinect from Microsoft, the EyeToy is not that useful and has failed to live up to its expectations, and this is something that has constantly been pointed out by both PlayStation and Sony fans.

“A dual camera EyeToy with microphone inputs would be a good start to creating real competition for Kinect, and it looks like that is the direction Sony is headed,” the report adds.

Moreover, with other reports arriving only recently stating that a unique, voice-optimized version of the Netflix software is currently being tested for the PlayStation, it could be assumed that Sony might be on its way to bring the newly enhanced EyeToy along with the new PlayStation.
