Twitter is now tablet-optimized, but locked down to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014)

Twitter has finally announced a tablet-optimized version of its service, but for now it's exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014).

Samsung officially unveiled its new Galaxy Note 3 phablet, Galaxy Gear smartwatch and Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) back in September. Twitter has now announced that it made a version of its service that is specifically optimized for Android tablets, but currently that version is exclusive to Samsung.

"While we've long offered a mobile app for Android users, we've not yet provided an app that is optimized for Android tablets - until now," announced Twitter on Thursday, Oct. 10. "The landscape view fills your screen with Tweets, conversations, Trends, accounts to follow and more. With a single tap, Tweets expand on the right side to show photos, videos and article previews. Dive deeper with another tap to see photos, play videos or read links from the web in fullscreen mode."

"Twitter for Android tablets will first be available on Samsung tablets, starting today [Oct. 10] with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1-2014 Edition, and it will come to other Android tablets by the end of the year. We worked with Samsung to include a few unique features."

It's not that tablet users are not currently able to access Twitter, but a tablet-optimized version makes a great difference when it comes to user experience. It's more than just a larger smartphone app, as it will now sport a two-column landscape layout to maximize the tablet's screen real estate. Moreover, a special Twitter widget will also show off the latest news and photos directly from the Home screen.

Twitter has even designed its tablet-optimized version to work well with Samsung's popular multi-window feature. If that's not enough, users will also be able to draw on photos using the S-Pen stylus and then post their masterpieces directly to Twitter.

The fact that it's currently working with just one single device might be a drawback for many, but Twitter did mention that it will make its tablet-optimized version available on more devices in the future.

In the meantime, if you don't plan on purchasing a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) anytime soon, you'll have to manage with the smartphone-optimized version or some third-party alternative.
