LG Chromebase unveiled: World’s first Chrome OS-powered AIO PC

Dec 18, 2013 10:37 AM EST

LG has announced its new Chromebase, an all-in-one (AIO) PC powered by Google's Chrome OS. The device will debut at CES 2014 in January.

Google has been making significant efforts to increase the relevance of its Chrome OS by making it a lightweight platform that powers affordable laptops. Various notebooks running Chrome OS have gone on sale with affordable price tags, but the platform could still use a wider adoption.

LG is now joining the Chrome OS party, but instead of a notebook the South Korean company is offering the Chromebase AIO PC. Chrome OS bodes well with laptops because it offers great battery life and an intuitive user interface, but it remains to be seen whether it can serve as a good desktop solution.

The new LG Chromebase sports a 21.5-inch full HD IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, packs an Intel Celeron processor and features 2GB of RAM. Other specs include a 16GB solid state drive (SSD), a 1.3-megapixel web cam and a built-in microphone for video calls, three USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 ports, a keyboard and a mouse.

"Simple to operate for all types of users, the award-winning LG Chromebase computer represents the successful combination of simplicity, power and great design," touts Hyoung-sei Park, head of the IT Business Division at LG Electronics, in a press release on Wednesday, Dec. 18. "LG Chromebase is the wave of the future for desktops, expected to be widely adopted not only at home, but especially in schools, hotels, call centers and other business settings."

"LG's Chromebase is an exciting new form factor that expands the options available to customers who want a fast, simple and secure computing experience for the home, school or office," adds Google vice president of product management Caesar Sengupta. "LG Electronics makes great devices that consumers love, and we're glad to welcome them to the Chrome family."

The company has yet to reveal any pricing details for the new LG Chromebase, but it will offer more information next month, when it officially introduces the new Chrome OS-powered AIO at the CES 2014 trade show.
