Motorola has again expanded its Moto Maker's design capabilities, adding college-flavored Moto X options, complete with a neat student discount, as part of its new College Collection.

The Moto X has drawn attention from the start through its unprecedented and unparalleled customization options, and Motorola keeps adding more options. After allowing interested buyers to choose wood panels for their Moto X through the Moto Maker customization tool, the company now has a special offer for college students.

"Moto Maker lets you express yourself and your style through your phone. Now, you can express your school spirit too!" touts Motorola in a new blog post on Friday, March 7. "Just in time for the tournament, we're introducing the College Collection, a range of college-inspired Moto X customization options that allow you to showcase your favorite school colors. We took a look at college colors across the board and added nine new back colors and three new accents to our Moto Maker palette so you can create the ultimate fan phone."

The new color additions are welcome, but the main attraction will consist of the actual cases, i.e. the part where you slap your school logo and team name. Motorola said it currently has "40 schools and counting," so more options will likely become available soon.

The cases are clear and are not actually printed onto the smartphone. If you don't want to spend much time designing your college-themed Moto X, you can simply go for a pre-configured setup based on your school. If, on the other hand, you don't see your favorite team in the pre-configured options, you can mix and match with the new color palette and create your own combination.

The new Moto X Moto Maker College Collection smartphones cost $399 without a contract, but Motorola will drop that price down to $339 off-contract for interested buyers who are currently in college. To benefit from that student discount, you will have to register at Motorola's dedicated web page here with a valid .edu address. The College Collection Moto X smartphones are also available from $49 with a new two-year carrier agreement.
