Samsung Galaxy K now official, really blurs the line between smartphone & camera
Alexandra BurlacuSamsung officially unveiled its latest camera smartphone, the Galaxy K Zoom, boasting a 20.7-megapixel sensor and 10x zoom, just as it was previously rumored.
Last year, the company launched several spinoffs of its then-flagship Galaxy S4, including a Galaxy S4 Zoom version that focused on offering a superior photography experience. This year, Samsung launched its new flagship as the Galaxy S5, but not everyone was convinced that a camera-centric version was necessary.
The new Samsung Galaxy S5 already sports notable improvements in the camera department compared to its predecessor, coming with a 16-megapixel shooter with several neat features. Nonetheless, a camera smartphone was still rumored to come as a "Zoom" model, and Samsung has now made its new Galaxy K Zoom official.
"With the introduction of the Galaxy K Zoom, Samsung continues to demonstrate our commitment to creating products that meet the diverse demands of our consumers," said Sun Hong Lim, Samsung's Senior Vice President of the mobile business. "The new Galaxy K Zoom empowers users to effortlessly capture and share their most important everyday moments in stunning clarity, with the convenience and connectedness of a Galaxy smartphone, for a unique, all-in-one mobile experience."
The latest offering rocks a powerful 20.7-megapixel rear camera with a slew of features that are not usually found on smartphones, aiming to blur the lines between a smartphone and a camera. As previously mentioned, the device comes with 10x optical zoom, which allows users to take zoomed-in photos without facing the degradation typically involved with digital zoom. The 20.7-megapixel sensor has BSI CMOS technology, which Samsung claims is "excellent" in low-light conditions.
The camera also features optical image stabilization (OIS), Xenon flash, auto focus, auto exposure separation, as well as a Pro Suggest mode that offers five optimized settings to choose from. Because it's also combined with a smartphone, the Galaxy K Zoom also has a Selfie Alarm option for timed selfies so users can take quality shots of themselves.
On the smartphone side, the new Samsung Galaxy K Zoom comes with a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720, a hexa core processor under the hood (1.3GHz quad-core and a 1.7GHz dual-core), 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage capacity, and a microSD card slot for additional memory of up to 64GB. Other specs include a 2-megapixel front shooter, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC, microUSB, as well as the expected sensors such as accelerometer, geomagnetic sensor, light sensor, gyro, and proximity sensor. On the software side, the device runs Android 4.4 KitKat.
