Samsung Galaxy S5 Active AnTuTu benchmarks reveal same specs as the flagship – What’s the point?
Alexandra BurlacuThe much-rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 Active has popped up in some AnTuTu benchmark results, revealing some exciting specifications for the rugged version of the flagship.
Samsung launched a Galaxy S4 last year as the more durable ruggedized version of its then-flagship Galaxy S4. Unlike standard model, the Galaxy S4 Active came with special certification for dust- and water-resistance.
This year, however, Samsung has launched its new flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone, and the device is already dust- and water-resistant. Consequently, when rumors first started to emerge regarding a Galaxy S5 Active version, many questioned whether such a model would make sense anymore.
Nevertheless, the purported Samsung Galaxy S5 Active has surfaced on several occasions so far, including a recent appearance at the FCC, listing support for AT&T's network.
The handset now stars in some intriguing AnTuTu benchmarks, which show quite a powerful Samsung SM-G870A device. Based on these benchmarks, not many differences set this model apart from the regular Galaxy S5, at least not in terms of specifications. While last year the Galaxy S4 Active came with watered-down specs compared to the flagship, this year it seems that the Galaxy S5 Active has virtually the same hardware setup as the standard model.
More specifically, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is listed here with a 1080p display (no mention of whether it's AMOLED or LCD), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz, Adreno 330 graphics, 2B of RAM, 16GB of internal storage capacity, and Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box. Other listed specs include the same 16-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front shooter as found on the regular Galaxy S5.
While the high-end specs are good news, they also stir more confusion when it comes to the difference compared to the flagship. A more rugged version with lower-end specs and a lower price tag could find an audience, but another high-end model with the same specs and likely a price to match doesn't really make sense.
The only way a Galaxy S5 Active variant would still be relevant in this scenario is if it will boast a much higher IP rating for dust- and water-resistance and perhaps a far sturdier body able to take more bumps and tumbles. The benchmarks don't reveal anything in this department, however.
With such similar specifications to the regular flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active could also differentiate itself in terms of appearance, perhaps sporting a more rugged, industrialized design, but it remains unclear at this point. Samsung has yet to confirm the existence or upcoming launch of a Galaxy S5 Active, so take everything with a grain of salt for now.
