Google Fit platform to debut at I/O 2014 conference to challenge Apple’s HealthKit?
Alexandra BurlacuGoogle I/O is set to kick off later this month and the company is expected to announce several exciting news, including a new Google Fit platform for wearable devices.
With the conference scheduled for June 25 - 26, anticipation is already building up and the rumor mill is busy churning about the expected unveilings. Among rumors of a Nexus 8 tablet, Android 5.0, and perhaps a Nexus 6 smartphone, some information has now surfaced regarding an upcoming fitness tracking service called Google Fit.
The purported Google Fit will apparently launch as the company's answer to Apple's newly-unveiled HealthKit, and will track a set of relevant data about the wearer's body.
Google has been rumored for quite some time to be entering the fitness tracking market, and now Forbes has more information on the matter.
"Google is planning to launch a new health service called Google Fit to collect and aggregate data from popular fitness trackers and health-related apps, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the company's plans," notes Forbes. "It will launch the service at the Google I/O conference for developers, being held on June 25 and 26."
Launching such a fitness-tracking platform would obviously compete directly with Apple's new HeathKit framework unveiled recently at WWDC 2014. HealthKit will arrive with Apple's latest iOS 8 mobile operating system, set to roll out in the fall.
The upcoming Google Fit platform will reportedly collect and combine user data using open APIs, and should enable wearable gadgets made by third-party manufacturers to connect with Google's own cloud-based services. Similarly to how Apple's HealthKit was designed, Google's own platform will aim to keep all user health and fitness data in one place, allowing for easier accessibility from all the devices they may use.
Google has yet to make it official, however, so everything about this purported platform remains in the rumor state at this point. If the company does indeed plan to make an official announcement at the I/O 2014 conference, we should learn the full details straight from the source soon enough. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, but take everything with a grain of salt in the meantime.
