Samsung Galaxy Note 4 gap is a ‘necessary manufacturing feature,’ not a defect

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 comes with a gap between its screen and casing that was believed to be a manufacturing defect, but apparently it's a feature.

After the whole #bendgate fiasco surrounding Apple, we now have the #gapgate issue related to the Galaxy Note 4. Samsung released its latest flagship phablet early in Korea and China in order to steal Apple's thunder, as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have yet to debut in these countries.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 went on sale on Friday, Sept. 26, in the company's home country of Korea, but some first buyers reported that the new device had a small gap between the polycarbonate body and the metallic frame going around the edges.

While the first (and logical) impression was that the gap in question was a manufacturing defect, which could allow dust and debris to settle in, it turns out that's not the case.

In an intriguing twist, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 user manual actually mentions this gap, and says that it's in fact a feature. Oddly enough, this "feature" is listed in the troubleshooting section.

"A small gap appears around the outside of the device case

This gap is a necessary manufacturing feature and some minor rocking or vibration of parts may occur," reads the Galaxy Note 4 user manual, as SamMobile points out in an update to its original report.

"Over time, friction between parts may cause this gap to expand slightly," the user manual adds."

Some users may not find this gap to be an inconvenience, but others may worry about the damage it could do to their device in time.

In conclusion, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 user guide suggests that this is a manufacturing feature, not defect, which should mean that everything is as intended. On the other hand, earlier reports pointing out this gap mentioned that some units had it, which would suggest that not all Galaxy Note 4 units come with this gap around their display. It remains unclear for now just what Samsung aimed for with this "feature," but we'll let you know as soon as we find out more.
