Smartphone bezels have become increasingly thinner over the past few years, and LG is now taking it to the next level with the "world's narrowest" full HD LCD smartphone display.

The company's latest smartphone display prototype is nothing short of impressive, featuring virtually no bezel around the display. More specifically, the panel's bezel is just 0.7-mm thin, which means it's even narrower than that of the Sharp Aquos Crystal.

"With the growing trend for large smartphones, customer demand for displays with a narrow bezel is increasing, because it enables users to enjoy the maximum use of screen area without compromising excellent grip and design," said Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of IT/Mobile Development Group at LG Display. "With this innovative product having many advantages, ranging from its narrow 0.7mm bezel and high resolution picture quality to its slim design and touch-embedded solutions, LG Display will continue to lead the growing market for large screen smartphones, meeting the expectations of customers and users by enhancing the quality of devices."

In order to achieve the impressive 0.7mm bezel width on the left and right sides of the smartphone panel, LG Display used its "Neo Edge" module processing technology, as well as the world's first "Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT)" technology.

The smartphone display itself measures 5.3 inches along its diagonal, which makes it a bit smaller than the screen found on the flagship LG G3. The company also removed the plastic strip that's typically found around LCD displays, which further helped slim things down. To eliminate that strip, LG Display used an adhesive solution to seal the panel.

According to the company, this adhesive not only favors narrower bezels, but it also "dramatically improves" the display's durability by making it more elastic.

It's worth pointing out, however, that this is just a prototype smartphone display, and such a phone with a virtually bezel-free display from LG is not available yet. The company said it will kick off production for this panel next month, with the first run scheduled for delivery to China.

LG Display said that it will start mass production of this panel in November, and customers in China will be the first to get it, as "demand for large screen smartphones is strong" in that market. At the same time, the company will also "actively" promote its display globally.
