LG Fx0 hitting KDDI as beefiest Firefox OS smartphone yet, sports translucent body
Alexandra BurlacuLG and Japanese carrier KDDI have a new LG Fx0 Firefox OS smartphone to show off, ready to launch on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.
The new LG Fx0 is the beefiest Firefox OS smartphone to date, and it's also the first of its kind to become available in Japan. While so far phones running Mozilla's mobile operating system have offered modest, low-end specifications, the LG Fx0 now takes things to the next level.
"Mozilla, the mission-based organization dedicated to promoting openness, innovation and opportunity to the Web, is excited to announce that KDDI will release the first Firefox OS smartphone in Japan, just in time for the holidays," touts the company. "Fx0 is the first high-spec Firefox OS smartphone with the latest Firefox OS update inside."
"We are very pleased to bring the first Firefox OS smartphone, based on Web technology standards, to the Japanese market today," added Takashi Tanaka, President of KDDI Japan. "KDDI hopes to build the new era of the Web through Web of Things, enabling everyone to create custom connected Web experiences."
While the new LG Fx0 is the highest-end option in the Firefox OS smartphone lineup, it's still not on par with the competition in terms of hardware. The handset comes with mid-range specs and features on board, albeit it boasts a rather unique design.
More specifically, the LG Fx0 wants to promote transparency even through its appearance, as the smartphone comes with a translucent body that leaves most internal components visible. The handset was designed by Tokujin Yoshioka to mirror the openness and transparency Mozilla wants to deliver with its Firefox OS. In addition to the translucent body, the LG Fx0 also features a textured finish.
In terms of specifications, the LG Fx0 sports a 4.7-inch IPS display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor under the hood, clocked at 1.2GHz and paired with 1.5GB of RAM. Other specs include 16GB of internal storage capacity, microSD support for additional memory, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front shooter for selfies and video calls. A 2,370 mAh battery will keep things up and running, while connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, 3G, NFC, and WebRTC.
As previously mentioned, the LG Fx0 Firefox OS handset will make its commercial debut on Dec. 25, apparently launching as an exclusive to KDDI in Japan. This means that it may not hit other markets outside of Japan, albeit this remains unconfirmed at this point. For more information, you can also check out KDDI's announcement at this link.
