Sony PlayStation Network (PSN) membership extensions, discounts to make up for holiday outage
Alexandra BurlacuSony wants to make up for its PlayStation Network (PSN) holiday outage by offering discounts and free membership extensions to gamers.
The PlayStation Network faced a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Christmas Day and it took a few days for Sony to get everything up and running again.
The Xbox Live network was in the same situation, having its service down on Christmas Day. A hacking collective called Lizard Squad claimed credit for the DDoS attacks on both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network services. While Microsoft managed to resolve issues and resume service in a timelier manner, however, it took longer for Sony to sort its PSN affairs after the attack and allow gamers to access the network again.
The company announced on Sunday, Dec. 28, that it has patched things up and everything was working properly, yet many gamers were still unable to access the PlayStation Network. Sony faced severe criticism from users and the company now wants to make up for the outage.
More specifically, Sony will offer membership extensions to users affected by the outage, and will also offer a notable discount in the near future.
"Since access to PlayStation Network was impacted during the holidays, we wanted to show our appreciation for your patience by offering all PlayStation Plus members that had an active membership or free trial on December 25th a membership extension of five days," Sony announced on Thursday, Jan. 1, on its official PlayStation Blog.
"We will post additional information here on PlayStation when the extension becomes available. If your membership or trial ends before the extension is available, you will receive five days of Plus to enjoy once the extension becomes available (we will notify you when)," adds the company.
Moreover, Sony also said that it will soon offer a 10 percent discount in the form of a limited-time promotional code. This will be a one-time discount, and users will be able to apply it to shave the price of a total cart purchase in the PlayStation Store.
"The discount can be used toward content available on PS Store including blockbuster new releases, award winning indie games, game add-ons and season passes, and an enormous selection of TV and Movies."
