The highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S6 may reportedly sport a glass back rather than a metal unibody design, according to a new report.

Samsung has long been expected to launch a metal flagship smartphone, and such expectations only intensified after the company released its Galaxy Alpha with a metallic frame and its Galaxy A series with full-metal bodies. The Galaxy Note 4 and Note 4 Edges came out with metal frames, but no high-end flagship smartphone from Samsung has a full-metal unibody design.

At the same time, rumors have also indicated that Samsung has gone back to the drawing board for its upcoming Galaxy S6, reinvisioning the design in what is referred to as "Project Zero" in order to make the new flagship truly stand out from its predecessors.

While most have assumed that the next-generation Samsung Galaxy S6 would rock a redesigned exterior with a full-metal unibody, a new report out of Korea now claims otherwise. At the same time, the new report also bolsters expectations of a Galaxy S6 Edge variant.

As online publication DDaily reports (via GforGames), a "Samsung Electronics official" said neither the Galaxy S6 nor the Galaxy S6 Edge will feature a metal unibody design. Instead, the two handsets would sport a metal frame similar to the Galaxy Note 4's, along with glass panels on both the front and rear. The official further noted that the battery will not be removable.

If this report turns out to be accurate, the Samsung Galaxy S6 may feature a glass back, a solution that other companies such as Sony, LG, Google, and Apple have opted for in the past. The iPhone 4, the Nexus 4, and many Xperia devices sport glass back panels, albeit this would likely come as a surprise for Galaxy fans.

When it comes to the reasoning behind this decision to use a metal frame and a glass back panel over a metal unibody, the report indicates that Samsung may be trying to set its high-end flagship lineup apart from the mid-range Galaxy A series.

Keep in mind, however, that it's all in the rumor state at this point and this report may well prove to be inaccurate. At the same time, this claim that the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will come with glass backs may not sound very likely, but nothing is impossible either. It remains to be seen just what Samsung has planned for its next-generation flagships on the design front, and we'll keep you up to date as soon as more details surface.
