The second-generation Moto X flagship smartphone will soon receive an update to the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop, the company officially announced.

This means that owners of the new Moto X (2nd Gen) will likely be among the first to receive the new update on a non-Nexus device.

"We are excited to announce a new software update for XT1095 by Motorola. This update brings AndroidTM 5.1  Lollipop to your phone along with other improvements," Motorola officially touted.

The post further offers a detailed changelog, listing a slew of changes Android 5.1 Lollipop will bring to the table. Interestingly enough, the update will include features and improvements Google said would only be available for Nexus devices, such as Android Run Time (ART) enhancements, camera improvements, or Device Protection.

Yes, according to the changelog offered by Motorola, the new Device Protection feature will also be available on the second-generation Moto X, although only the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, which come with Lollipop out of the box, were expected to get the feature now.

Device Protection will make sure to keep your device locked until you sign into your Google Account, so in case you lose it or it gets stolen it will remain locked even if someone attempts a factory data reset.

The camera enhancements, meanwhile, will reportedly allow users to capture better shots in low-light environments by reducing the noise and improving the responsiveness of the front shooter.

Lastly, ART improvements should enable apps to launch much faster after the update. In terms of notifications, the updated software will now allow users to swipe up notifications to remove them from the screen, while still keeping them in the notifications tray until you dismiss them for good.

The update will also include the usual mix of bug fixes and general performance improvements to make everything work more smoothly.

As always, before downloading and installing the update it is recommended to have at least 50 percent of battery life, and connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network so the process goes without interruptions or additional data charges. The Moto X Pure Edition will likely be the first variant to get the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop update over the air (OTA), but carrier versions of the smartphone should get it soon enough as well. The OTA should start hitting Moto X (2nd Gen) devices within the next few weeks.
