Nokia Networks teams up with Artemis, will test pCell
Mary Cris BalancioNokia Networks has just announced that they plan to begin testing Artemis' technology called pCell starting March next year with their wireless carriers. These tests will be done to prove that pCell can indeed work advertised by Artemis. This announcement comes as something big and exciting for Artemis, especially since they have been looking for a big wireless industry partner that is willing to give their technology a chance.
Artemis Networks is a start-up company located in San Francisco and was founded by entrepreneur Steve Perlman, who also created several other companies including the Web TV. Artemis Networks has introduced their technology pCell last year.
Their technology, according to them, will enable a much faster internet access speed on wireless networks. This access, for now, is said to be slow especially when consumers use their smartphones in busy places. Last year, they are all set to release, except that they needed a big company who they can convince to use their technology. Now they don't have to worry as Nokia has answered that call.
Traditionally, the cellular networks rely only on antennas placed strategically around the cities. Each position is well placed as they cannot be located too close to each other as antenna will interfere with each other's wireless signal.
But with wireless networks using their technology, Perlman says that there will be less concern for wireless networks interference from nearby antennas. According to Perlman, data centers connected to the antennas will be able to perform calculations instantaneously.
This will then make a coherent wireless signal for every smartphone consumer or another device that are within the antenna's range. So instead of having a slow internet connection, users will now be able to have internet at full capacity through pCell.
And since pCell antennas are made to be compatible to smartphones that run on standard 4G LTE networks, Artemis promises users of current Android smartphones and iPhones will not have to do anything to be able to experience the benefits that their technology pCell provides.
Meanwhile in an interview; Nokia Networks executive vice president and chief technology officer, Hossein Moiin said that he himself went to Artemis' lab to see the demonstration of pCell. So now they wanted to bring it outside of the lab and test it in a situation that would be normal to consumers. Moiin also said that they will test the pCell with open eyes. And though there is a possibility that it would be a failure, he said that the test is definitely worth trying.
