Google Announces Clean Energy Purchases And Plans

Mary Cris Balancio

Google once again is making the headlines, but this time for doing something that could benefit everyone on the planet. The tech company is moving in one of their massive data centers that drive their online empire to a coal fired power plant in northern Alabama.

They have decided to replace the Widows creek plant as it shuts down because it has what the company needs, a place to start new things. Google Director of Data Energy And Location, Gary Demasi, said that they would be building their data center campus on the said site to take advantage of the infrastructure that has been built over the decades.

Demasi adds that company will be the ones actually consuming the energy this time. The said clean energy will be coming from solar plants, wind farms and other renewable energy resources. The tech giant has had plans to power all of their 14 data centers with renewable energy.

Google has also just announced that they will be purchasing 842 megawatts of clean energy. This could be summed up to having enough to power about two million homes. It should be noted that 37% of the power used on the tech giant's data centers comes from renewable sources.

The tech company's plans to purchase clean energy will be from six different sources. The said sources includes 61 megawatts of solar power from North Carolina's Duke Energy, 76 megawatts from a wind farm in Sweden's Västernorrland County and 80 megawatts of solar energy from Chile.

Google believes with these deals, not only will their company benefit, but also be able to promote the adoption of renewable energy in general. But Google is not the only company to make a move towards a cleaner energy.

Just this summer, it can be noted that 13 A-list companies have also made major commitments towards clean energy under the backing of the American Business Act of the White House. The companies that made a commitment also include tech companies, Apple and Microsoft.

Earlier this summer when the White House announced their commitments for a cleaner energy, the tech giant could be recalled to have vowed that they will triple their clean energy purchases by 2025. Now they are about a third into that vow.

Google has also been investing in major clean energy projects as an effort to invoke a large shift across other industries. As of now the tech giant has about 22 clean energy infrastructure investments, which spans to 2.5 gigawatts total of power and more than $2 billion USD.
