Google Announces A Breakthrough In Their Quantum Computers
Mary Cris BalancioThis Wednesday, Dec. 10, Google has announced that they have made a breakthrough in quantum computing. The tech giant claims that they have found the quantum algorithm that will solve problems 100 million times faster than normal. If these claims prove true, it could lead to iRobot style artificial intelligence and also take the US space program a step forward.
It could be recalled that two years ago in the year 2013, the search engine company, together with NASA has worked on the D-Wave X2 computing system. The D-Wave was then supposed to be hailed as the world's first functional quantum computer. It was supposed to be lightning fast, even 3,600 times faster than a supercomputer. However experts from both companies failed to prove that the machine does actually use the quantum realm to produce its calculations. In short it was proven to be a futile project.
With the latest announcement, it seems like they have redeemed themselves. Google's study this time, centers on the technique "quantum annealing" which determines the global minimum for a certain function when it is presented with a set of potential solutions. In short, it figures the best solution or action among several options to complete a task.
The tech company has recently conducted proof of concept trials against conventional systems running the techniques simulated annealing and Monte Carlo methods to test the new QA algorithm. The results that met the team were impressive and it shows that the tech giant's method has beaten the other two techniques.
Google deems the result as both intriguing and encouraging, even if it still needs a few more researches and tweaks before it will be ready for consumers. It is still a step closer to a possible technological revolution.
The tech giant's team also says that the potential of a regular computer to run faster would not extend as problems grew in size in the future. That's the reason why they chose to compare it to two techniques or algorithms.
