Apple’s Live Photo Support Rolls Out Slowly In Facebook

Mary Cris Balancio

Today marks a special day for both Facebook and Apple as the social media is yet again adding a new app or rather is now supporting the tech giant's Live Photo app. This will start with the social network allowing users to upload and view live photos from their iOS app.

The said move by Facebook follows that of Tumblr's earlier support for the fairly new Apple app. It is a bit sad for Android, desktop and other mobile web users, though, as the said photo format is currently only supported by Facebook's iOS app.

But iOS users who can use the app are only those who have the iOS 9 version; therefore, newer devices starting from iPhone 4S can be able to access it. But even if the app will be supported on other devices, users will not be seeing it pop in their feeds today and might have to wait for next year when the social media is bound to support it on all their apps.

So how does one upload a "Live Photo?" Facebook users can do their usual uploading of photos, but they have to select or check the box at the lower right area of the photo that says "live." Once it is selected and the photo is uploaded, it now becomes a live photo. If this is not done, the photo will just be uploaded as a standard photo.

Once a live photo is uploaded on a user's News Feed, the live photos will appear static as default. At the lower right of the photo, a set of concentric circles or an icon that indicates a live photo in Apple can be seen. By pressing and holding the photo with the icon, the user's followers and friends can now view the photo play, which is possible for them if they are also using a device with an iOS 9 version or above. Once the viewer stops pressing the icon, the photo goes back to being static.

While Facebook users who have devices as old as iPhone 4S are able to view the photos on the Live Photo App, only iPhone 6S and 6S Plus users are able to capture live photos. Currently, aside from slowly rolling out support for Apple's Live Photo format, the social media can be recalled to have added support for Apple's 3D touch on its iOS app.
