'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' News, Release Date: Producer Explains Why There Will Be No Female Hero
Jazz RosinProducer Eiji Aonuma confirms that there will be no female protagonists in "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."
During this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Gamespot interviewed the "Zelda" producer, with translation provided by a Nintendo representative. Gamespot asked Aonuma if he is aware of the rumors circulating about a possible female version of Link and if they are true.
Aonuma said that he is aware of the rumors, and has talked to the team about it. Instead of considering a female version of Link, however, the team thought about making Princess Zelda the protagonist. The producer said that it is simpler to consider Zelda as the main character.
The producer then said that the idea was scrapped because if Zelda will be the main hero, then Link will have nothing else to do.
Aonuma also said that making a female Link will disrupt the balance of the team's idea of the Triforce. "The Triforce is made up of Princess Zelda, Ganon, and Link. Princess Zelda is obviously female," Aonuma told Kotaku. "If we made Link a female we thought that would mess with the balance of the Triforce. That's why we decided not to do it."
"I in no way had intention of leading people into believing Link was female," Aonuma also told Kotaku.
A female version of Link, Linkle, has debuted on the 3DS version of "Hyrule Warriors" this year. Aonuma said that he has discussed the possibility of having a female Link in a "Zelda" game with "Hyrule Warriors" producer Yousuke Hayashi.
"There was talk about the female Link and at the time we thought oh yeah that might be fun," Aonuma said. "In Mr. Hayashi's mind that idea cemented."
"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" was officially unveiled at E3 this year, at Nintendo's own live stream event called Nintendo Playhouse. The art style reminds fans of "Wind Waker", with hints of elements from the newer titles, according to Cultured Vultures.
Nintendo has also released three new Amiibo for the game, including an Archer Link, a Rider Link (Link riding on a horse) and an enemy named the Guardian.
