'Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE' Review: 'Shin Megami Tensei,' 'Fire Emblem' Crossover Creates Wii U JRPG Gem
Jazz RosinThere is still hope for Nintendo's Wii U in the form of Atlus' JRPG gem "Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE." Released last December in Japan, the game now makes its way to North American and British shores, with generally positive reviews.
Let's take a look at what the critics have to say about this "Shin Megami Tensei" and "Fire Emblem" collaboration.
Destructoid - 8 out of 10
Destructoid called "Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" a warmup for Atlus' upcoming title "Persona 5." First announced in 2013, the JRPG game is said to be worth the wait.
The site praised the game's "bright, bold world", a departure from recent games' "drab grimdark." While it would not be enough to encourage people to buy a Wii U just to play the game, "Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" is still an "impressive effort with a few noticeable problems holding it back."
Polygon - 9.5 out of 10
"Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" is a JRPG game that deserves its turn in the spotlight, according to Polygon's review. The game has a "magical girl anime" feel to it, calling it "a co-ed version of 'Sailor Moon' for the 'Love Live!' age."
Polygon gave "Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" an almost perfect score of 9.5, calling the game a "spirited fun blend of two great RPG series."
Gamespot - 8 out of 10
Gamespot described "Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" as a "gorgeous, fun and a smart collaboration all around." "SMT" and "Fire Emblem" is a combination that is meant to be, with the classic "Persona"-esque battle system fits well with "Fire Emblem's" weapon and class upgrade system.
Backtracking through dungeons and fighting bosses can be quite a chore and can bring the momentum down, but the game's world is something that the players would want to explore further.
Gamesradar+ - 4 out of 5
Gamesradar described "Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" as a "fun, incredibly player-friendly romp that knows it shouldn't take itself too seriously." The combat system, while easy to understand, is surprisingly deep.
Compared to previous SMT titles wherein players would have to collect a whole slew of monsters to control, each characters have their own "Mirages," which are based on various "Fire Emblem" characters.
Gamesradar also expressed its concerns about the tedious backtracking in the game, and the fact that each character can only have six combat skills at a time.
"Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" will be available on the Wii U on June 24.
