'Dragon Quest Builders': Better Than 'Minecraft'? Game Producer Talks About Upcoming Game
J RoseThe next game in the "Dragon Quest" series, "Dragon Quest Builders," has been endlessly compared to Mojang's popular sandbox game "Minecraft." However, the game is gearing up to be even better than "Minecraft."
With its open world sandbox and town construction being two of its major themes, it comes as no surprise that "Dragon Quest Builders" is being touted as a "Minecraft" clone by many. Now game producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto has confirmed that the similarities end there, stating that "Dragon Quest Builders" is a completely different game.
Speaking to Hardcore Gamer, Fujimoto said that "Dragon Quest Builders" is still an RPG through and through, despite the building and sandbox mechanics. The game will feature some familiar elements that will definitely please longtime "Dragon Quest" fans, like location names, monsters and other "Dragon Quest" references.
To simplify, "Dragon Quest Builders" is really just a new "Dragon Quest" game with new mechanics, similar to what the developers did with "Dragon Quest Heroes."
Fujimoto also said that while "Dragon Quest Builders" is story-driven, players still have the freedom to play however they wanted, taking advantage of the open world and building aspects of the game.
"You can heal [NPC's] to recover hit points more quickly, or you can take their unconscious body and drop them off in some far away desolate location," Fujimoto joked, "There are many online videos posted in Japan of people playing in that style where they do bad things to the NPCs."
"We have not seen any that do that specifically, but behaving in a sadistic way toward the NPCs is apparently very popular," the game producer said.
Fujimoto also added that anyone can pick this game up and play, with or without any sandbox or building game experience. The game is also said to be highly addictive, with some people in Japan spending over fifty days trying to create in-game kingdoms and buildings.
"Even people who are not fans of traditional 'Dragon Quest' games can enjoy this, so I hope a lot of people give it a shot when it comes out next month," Fujimoto said.
"Dragon Quest Builders" will be released on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on Oct. 11.
