iPhone 8 Rumors: An All-Curved Display And Plastic OLED Panel

With Samsung spearheading the curved display race for smartphones with their flagship devices like the Galaxy S7 Edge, Apple is rumored to follow suit with their next flagship device, the iPhone 8. Aside from that, Apple is also planning to use plastic OLED panel, as reported on TechRepublic.

Reportedly, a month before the very first iPhone's release, Steve Jobs demanded that the screen of their iPhone be made out of glass instead of plastic. This decision was made after an earlier prototype of the said device suffered numerous scratches while inside his pocket. However, new reports show that Apple is going in another direction and is planning to use plastic OLED, which can be supplied by their biggest rival: Samsung. This will make the iPhone 8 possibly have a curved display, just like most Samsung devices.

Another rumor about the iPhone 8 is that it may have an edge-less screen and may have to remove bezels from the top and bottom of its display, as well as drop the physical home button altogether and incorporate the Touch ID into the screen. The use of an A11 chip is also rumoured to be on the next iPhone for faster processing and iris scanning for added security measures.

Using plastic on a smartphone's display instead of glass may have its disadvantages, though. For one, it will be more prone to scratches due to its softer material. On a brighter note, it will not shatter like glass when accidentally dropped. Whether Apple may or may not have a way to strengthen this material, it still remains to be seen.

In other news, Samsung is the one supplying OLED display panels to Apple. However, reports show that Apple plans to reduce its reliance with Samsung to prevent future leaks of their devices to their rival.
