After Success of ‘Super Mario Run,’ ‘Pokemon Go,’ Nintendo Commits to 2 to 3 Games A Year; ‘Fire Emblem’ and ‘Animal Crossing’ First on Pipeline
Kaye ReeseNintendo fans can look forward to an exciting 2017 as the Japan-based gaming giant confirmed its promise to bring "Super Mario Run" on Android. The company also revealed that two to three mobile games a year are currently on its pipeline as it seeks to explore its future on mobile, according to an interview with president Tatsumi Kimishima.
This is great news for all enthusiasts, who have been enjoying a spate of classic games being brought to the mobile this year, as was the case with "Super Mario Run" and worldwide phenomenon "Pokemon Go." Given its massive success with mobile this year, and a massive slash in 3DS revenue, looks like the former may be its best way forward.
Two to three Nintendo games a year
And it looks like Kimishima is on the same page. In an interview with Macworld, the Nintendo president revealed that "Super Mario Run" was just the beginning of its mobile strategy, as the company is slated to release two to three games a year beyond 2017. To kickstart this promise, classic NES games "Fire Emblem" and "Animal Crossing" are reportedly on the pipeline for launch next year, according to Tech Crunch.
It's unclear, however, whether Android users would be able to join in on the fun as immediately. "Super Mario Run" will be available on Android next year, but will still have to wait in the cold for a couple of months. Hopefully Nintendo also commits to releases that are immediately available to both iOS and Android users.
Prepping for the Nintendo Switch
The commitment to at least two games on mobile a year is an intriguing yet welcome sideline as it prepares to launch its tablet-console, the Nintendo Switch. The new device promises to revolutionize gameplay and is also slated to release next year, so stay tuned for more news and updates.
