After the announcement of Cyanogen Inc. that it will no longer support the nightly builds for the OS starting Dec. 31, 2016, the CyanogenMod community will continue as Linage OS as reported by techcrunch. This is certainly a good news for fans of the OS.
CyanogenMod is a popular Custom ROM that users can flash or install on their Android devices replacing its Operating System completely. This is accomplished by rooting the device and installing a custom recovery prior to flashing of the Custom Rom.
The CyanogenMod community, the developers of the OS, stated that they have lost their voice in the direction of the company. They fear that even though they regroup and continue the development of the OS, the thought of CM being sold to a third party company will be a huge weight on their shoulders because there is a high possibility that this might happen.
Fortunately, the team has been preparing for an alternative plan all this time. The project will be continued as Lineage OS by the CyanogenMod community, a rebranded name of the OS. They stated that Lineage will go back to their roots and will maintain the proficient quality and reliability of the OS.
According to other reports, Lineage OS will now be an independent team that will not have any monetary support by Cyanogen Inc. It will require the infrastructure needed by developers to work on the open source code by CyanogenMod.
This also means that less popular Android devices will no longer receive this OS because the team might focus their development for popular ones since those devices are high on demand. As a result, high-end Android devices will not be affected by the transition.
