According to a simulation by Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), the world is steadily going to a wild future where the crisis of food shortage can be a catalyst for wars and riots. Though a bit exaggerated, the crisis is real and serious, the simulation implies that the food production will be short compared to the consumption.
An estimated plus of two to three billion people to feed upon 2050 said by UN and the change in climate impairing the production of crops around two percent per decade, the scenario of prevention seems impossible. With the current urbanization trend and migration of people to the cities, a possible shortage of workforce is also imminent
Battling food crisis has been evident throughout the history. Previously, mechanization and fertilizers made a way to increase resources and food production. But now resources are going scarce, another game changer will be needed to have efficiency on the current resources at hand.
The answer might be in the new genre of digital technologies in different fields and has the capabilities to change food production to meet consumption of the continuously growing population.
Agriculture, traditionally, are series of specific tasks on a fixed schedule, with it are small management on waste and losses. Although, recent creations came into making "precision farming" real, which involves in data gathering, insights that can determine which action is which for a specific time and place.
"Precision Agriculture can transform the food industry to be more efficient, less costly, and more sustainable," stated by IBM's Global supply Chain expert, Paul Chang. "By utilizing IoT platforms to gather various sensor data and integrate with predictive analytics, the industry can take actions to maximize yield, minimize losses, and ensure sustainable practices."
Kai Goerlich, SAP's digital futures Research Director, says that new technology is able to adjust farming to be more productive and stabilize crops. Analytics of it are real-time and sensors that can be maximized for operations on food commodities.
The partnership of SAP's digital farming and Senet's IoT sensors offers several ways to utilize data to better the planning and making of decisions. The specific details and report were discussed over TechCrunch, discussing all possible ways to improve the prevention of the impending crisis at hand.
The recent development on Earth will definitely dictate a new way of food production and consumption for the coming years. As history demonstrates it, new found technology will assist the human kind in battling the crisis of food shortage like several events in the history. Will our kind be able to adjust and act on the right time is the question to ask.
