Apple-Nokia Patents Fight Heats Up As Apple Withdraws All Nokia-Owned Withings Products
Ritwik RoyIt's a no deal for Apple when it comes to products made by Withings and it is because of the escalating patents row between the Cupertino tech giant and the Finnish smartphone maker Nokia. Withings is a French company and a Nokia subsidiary. Apple has pulled out all Withings products from both its brick-and-mortar as well as virtual stores.
The row with Nokia is getting bigger as the company has claimed infringement of 40 patents in lawsuits spanning across 11 countries. According to Appleinsider, many Withings iOS-compatible products were available in Apple stores for nearly two years. Most of the products were health-related connected accessories.
Nokia acquired Withings for nearly $190 million in April and integrated it into Nokia's Digital Health unit. Even then Withings product sales continue for Apple. Some of the popular Withings devices were Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor and Body Cardio Scale. However, since Nokia sued Apple on Wednesday in Germany and US, these products are not even identified by Apple search anymore.
Nokia accused the iPhone manufacturer of violating 32 patents acquired in portfolio purchases in 2013 and 2016. Apple fired back with a suit against Nokia and nine patent holding firms for extracting and extorting excessive revenues from Apple. Next, Nokia launched a second salvo on Thursday.
Nokia has alleged that since the earlier patent case was settled, Apple has continued to decline offers made by Nokia to license other parts of its patented inventions used by many Apple products, reports Gadgets 360. Apple has snapped back stating that Nokia already possesses license agreements to its patents for fair and reasonable terms.
The Nokia-Apple patent case may be settled before the fight turns ugly. Both companies have already agreed to take back their complaints with the International Trade Commission over the use of intellectual property.
