Sony Tablet P, Xperia Active Getting Android 4.0 ICS Treatment in Select Markets

Sony seems to be the only major android device manufacturer that is taking Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update seriously. After delivering the ICS update to Sony Xperia 2011 lineup of smartphones and Sony Tablet S earlier this year, Android 4.0 update is now available on Sony Tablet P. Other than the mighty tablet with two displays, Sony’s rugged smartphone Xperia Active is also receiving official Android 4.0 update.

Sony revealed last week that the Android 4.0 update is underway for its Tablet P tablet. The tablet was meant to receive the update a long ago as the Tablet S was receiving Ice Cream Sandwich in April. However, due to its Nintendo 3DS-like form factor, developers had to modify the OS in a new way to port it on this unique tablet.

Bumping Android OS up from Honeycomb to Ice Cream Sandwich means an array of new features. Particularly in Sony Tablet P, user interface has significantly improved with the update. Browser performance and multi-tasking has been improved. Switching between mobile and desktop version of a Web site is now possible on the tablet. Among the new features include direct access to SD card, launch camera directly from lockscreen and addition of panorama mode to camera UI. Users can now capture screenshots natively on Sony Tablet P.

In another announcement on Sony Xperia support forum, the Japanese electronics giant announced the availability of Ice Cream Sandwich on the much-highlighted Xperia Active smartphone.

In both the cases, the update is rolling out in batches and will be available across the globe over a period of time. Sony fanboys in Europe will be first to receive the official update followed by users in Asian and American markets.

Whenever the update is available in your region, the device will give a notification regarding the update. Subsequently, you can also check for the update manually.
