Samsung Galaxy S8 Release Date, Specs & Features [VIDEO]; Samsung's Next Flagship Smartphone May Ditch The Home Button
Vinay PatelSamsung's Galaxy S8 is without an iota of doubt, one of the most anticipated smartphones rumored to arrive next year. While Galaxy fans continue to wait with bated breath to find out what aces the South Korean tech firm has up its sleeve for the upcoming device, multiple sources have been churning all sorts of reports surrounding the Galaxy S8's release date, specs, and other details.
The latest report stems from some tweets by Android Police's David Ruddock, who hinted at a slew of changes to the Samsung Galaxy S8 that will radically alter the device. Here's what he suggests the company will do:
Oust the physical navigation keys
Beef up the on-screen navigation buttons with 3D Touch style functionality
Make the fingerprint scanner rear-mounted
While the aforementioned changes seem quite drastic and debatable, Ian Morris from Forbes tackled these alleged changes one by one.
The rumor mill has been swirling all sorts of speculations around the removal of physical buttons for a long time. Apparently, it's how Google prefers Android to be driven -- with the help of on-screen keys. That being said, Samsung has continued to retain the physical keys for ages and there is no concrete reason for the company to get rid of it now.
Moreover, there is a possibility that Samsung may opt to go for a comparatively larger screen that covers the whole device. This could be something similar to the current Edge devices, with the rolling edge. However, the display will shift a bit more to the top and the bottom of the phone.
This also echoes reports from multiple sources that have been suggesting that Samsung will oust the headphone jack from the Galaxy S8 smartphone. In order to achieve a screen that extends all the way down to the bottom of the screen, it would be imperative for the company to scrap the jack.
As far as moving the fingerprint scanner on the rear is concerned, this is quite hard to believe, especially since there is technology that would allow Samsung to embed a fingerprint scanner right beneath the screen without any physical home button. Aside from that, there's word that Samsung could license Qualcomm's SenseID system.
