At the recent CES 2017, Samsung has started a whole new sub-brand of gaming PCs which is also Samsung's answer to Lenovo's Legion --- the Notebook Odyssey having two variants: 15-inch and 17-inch display. They may look attractive but according to reports, Odyssey is unoriginal and odious.

Samsung introduces the lower-tier model having a red-backlit keyboard while the higher-end model having a multicolored keyboard. Reportedly, Samsung forwent high-end materials for a huge mass of hollow plastic which can be found on both the top lid and keyboard of the Odyssey 17. It seems that Samsung's Odyssey laptops are unconvincing and doesn't match the hydraulic motion of Lenovo's ThinkPads.

The Odyssey is surrounded with a glossy plastic that is located on each of the touchpad's side highlighted by LED lighting. Though it seemingly looks attractive but it has no user benefit. Meanwhile, it has a "Beast Mode" button above the keyboard that turns the max performance mode on that is integrated in the Odyssey Control software suite.

Samsung was expected to have a different look but then it went exactly like every gaming PC. Note that Asus and Alienware have advanced to better screens and keyboards, and have used more metal in their construction.

Moreover, the laptop's matte displays only exhibited so-so viewing angles and muted color scheme, having their 17-incher with 300 nits of brightness while 15.6-inch model has 280 nits both just having 1080p.

Apparently the starting price for Odyssey laptops, particularly the smaller one, will be at $1,199, which is equipped with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050. But then, a Dell Inspiron laptop has the same GPU which is only for $799, THE VERGE reported.

On a brighter note, Samsung Notebook Odyssey laptops include a HexaFlow Vent, a probed panel at the bottom, which helps airflow around the innards of each machine and is unlockable with just three screws. Its RAM can be upgraded or just add a bigger and better NVMe SSD and there is a good thing as why it is made of plastic. It makes the laptops light weight for their size.

The 15-inch is 2.53kg (5.6lbs) while its 17-inch Samsung Odyssey laptop weighs 3.79kgs (8.4lbs). It makes the Odyssey way cheaper for its high-specs considering it includes SSD storage, lots of memory, a USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 port, and a quad-core Intel Kaby Lake processor.
