Samsung Announces Second Generation 'Family Hub Refrigerator'
Shena GolosinoSamsung had introduced its $6,000 four-door fridge "Family Hub Refrigerator" at CES 2016. What's unique about the smart refrigerator was that it was equipped with a king-sized touchscreen loaded with a lot of apps, cameras and Wi-Fi connectivity. Now, at CES 2017, the tech giant has unveiled a brand new lineup of "Family Hub 2.0" fridges.
According to Geek Wire, the new, second-gen family of Family Hubs will be available in 10 different models. The smart refrigerator features a set of cameras in the door that captures a photo of the fridge contents every time its door is closed. The image can be put up to your smartphone to help you know what you still have and what you need to buy. The LCD interface makes it easier to view a recipe that is easily readable even from a few feet away. It can also share and update calendars, share kid's work of art, leave notes, do online grocery shopping and stream music. It costs $5000 at the time of its release.
According to CNet, additional features to the fridge's technology has been added like the voice recognition through the use of spoken commands that allows the checking of weather, managing the calendar and shopping lists and shopping groceries online. Its cameras were said to be upgraded and the feedbacks of the first-gen Family Hub refrigerator owners were a key to the second generation's upgrade. Family members can create their own profiles now for an easier view of relevant information and app settings. Another new feature is that the fridge can read a recipe's instructions out loud while you are cooking.
Critics pointed out the first-gen Samsung refrigerator failed due to its high price. But technically, the first-gen was never set to sell millions but just to catch people's attention and interest.
"Family Hub is all about food, family and entertainment, and we are taking each of these functions to the next level," John Herrington, senior vice president for Samsung Electronics America, said. He also added that current owners of the first-gen "Family Hub Refrigerator" will get receive an upgrade of the new version via software update.
