Sprint's HTC Evo 3D, Design 4G to Receive Android 4.0 ICS Update

Sprint users owning HTC Evo 3D or the Evo Design 4G have a bit of good news to look forward to. Reports suggest that the carrier is working towards bringing the latest Android platform, the Ice Cream Sandwich, to the two HTC smartphones.

Sprint announced on its Community forum on Monday that it will start rolling out the Ice Cream Sandwich platform for HTC Evo 3D and HTC Evo Design 4G in early August.

As Sprint notes, the roll out begins in early August. Like always, the updates will proceed in phases. Once the updates are available in respective area, users will get notified on the screen and can download the ICS.

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is a significant improvement over Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Along with fixing bugs and improving stability as well as performance, ICS also brings an array of new features to Android devices.

In case of the Evo 3D and Design 4G, a new launcher will replace HTC's old one. The launcher will comprise revamped user interface, resizable widgets, and new home screen functions. The camera app is also receiving an update with added Panorama shooting mode, stabilized image zoom, lowered shutter lag, and filter effects like Vintage, Posterize, Vignette, and Depth of Field.

Users will be able to request for a full desktop version of a website in the build-in browser. In addition, special innovative features like Android Bean, Face Unlock, and control over data usage also form a part of the package. With Google+ integration, users can video chat with up to twenty friends simultaneously with the front-facing camera.

Android 4.0 ICS for the EVO 3D and Design 4G is taking longer to reach the U.S. Folks at CyanogenMod - a popular customROM maker - committed that stabilizing CM9 (a customROM based on Android 4.0 ICS) was a lengthy process. Now it seems clearer, that with a 64 percent distribution share, how the Gingerbread platform continues to dominate the Android OS version. Presently, the Ice Cream Sandwich only runs on 10 percent of Android devices despite being unveiled nine months ago.

Google recently unveiled the Jelly Bean, the next Android version. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Google Nexus S are expected to sport this platform.

Given that the smartphone platform upgrade to ICS itself has been a long wait for HTC users, it seems inevitable that HTC Evo 3D and the Evo Design 4G aficionados will have to bide some time before this upgrade makes the HTC cut.
