'Game of Thrones' Prequel: A Possibility after Season 8 Finale?
Rommel"Game of Thrones" series finale is currently in the planning phase with the showrunners debating whether there should be six episodes or more. HBO execs have been encouraging the playmakers to have more but at the end of it, it is still the playmaker's call on how to end the epic, long-running series. Now, a possibility of a "Game of Thrones" prequel is being thrown into the table and HBO execs are saying they would be foolish not to explore it. Will this be the series extension fans are craving for?
Set to wrap up on its eighth and final season, "Game of Thrones" has not yet decided if they will be having more than six episodes. This is according to HBO programming head Casey Bloys in his recent interview. Show's directors have announced previously that the show is down to the last 13 episodes and it is already confirmed that the forthcoming Season 7 will have seven episodes. Bloys said show creators Benioff and Weiss are still figuring out how to shape the final season but he is giving them the freedom to do what they want with the series.
This summer, the series will be premiering its seventh season, a little later than the usual. Bloys is also keen on extending the show via a "Game of Thrones" prequel - a spinoff that could really be supported by the fans of the show. He said: "It is such a big property that we would be foolish not to explore. It set the bar pretty high. We'll take a look at it but it has to be remarkable. I would not want to risk the beauty of the series so I would rather have no sequel at all than to rush it out."
Still, the talk about a sequel or a prequel - a spinoff, is open and up in the air. However, the HBO exec remains calm and collected saying they need not produce something just because. Here are some speculations for a prequel:
