Total Recall for iOS Just Isn't Very Good, But Here are the Details

Jonathan Charles

Total Recall, the movie rebooting the film of the same name and originally starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, has a movie tie-in game for iOS. Despite not being very good or in demand by gaming aficionados, the "game" has been previewed.

Fundamentally, the game is an on-rails shooter (think Infinity Blade with guns) and, therefore, isn't engaging from the outset. Players simply control the gun and can pop out from cover to shoot enemies. It's actually like Time Crisis, but not as fun and not designed for wasting quarters in an arcade setting. Enemies conveniently populate the area as the character moves forward. Players control the gun.

Aiming feels inconsistent, according to Touch Arcade. Even when aiming perfectly at an enemy's head, the bullets randomly miss. It's similar to Sleeping Dogs in the simulation of realism when shooting. In the latter aiming is intentionally inaccurate, so it probably comes down to user preference.

Movement is incredibly slow and the number of enemies populating an area is small. The game is scripted; thus, not killing enemies in time means that the character continues to walk through the level while getting shot.

The app has a fairly insulting in-app purchase policy. Weapons can be bought through gold bars, not in-game. Therefore, weapons can cost gold bars - at $1 per gold bar. Weapons cost $15 and the game's dynamics require players to purchase them. So, effectively, completing the game leads to a user spending a stash of cash and incurring high costs, along with the regular sub-$1 price for the game. Weaker weapons can be bought with silver, found in-game. Players can also buy health kits, a "booster," and an armor.

Cutscenes are displayed through a comic book-esque format and ties into the movie; therefore, spoilers are there by the number.

The movie is a reboot of the original Total Recall and doesn't have the trip to Mars from the original. The plot is based around a futuristic setting in 2084 and the battle between two superpowers: Euroamerica/Western Hemisphere, and New Shanghai/Eastern Hemisphere. A corporation called Rekall provides people with memories of lives desired.

Total Recall for iOS and Android is available now for $0.99. Unless slow pacing and scripted action is your idea of fun, then this one isn't worth your time. Sorry Arnie.
