Sprint HTC EVO 3D Gets to Lick Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) Finally

Johnny Wills

A couple of weeks after confirming the Android 4.0 ICS update for the aging EVO 3D, Sprint is finally rolling out the update. Sprint announced on its HTC EVO 3D update page that Android 4.0 ICS update for the device is rolling out. HTC EVO 3D owners started receiving the update notification on Tuesday (July 31).

The major update is available as OTA (over-the-air) download. The update is over 300MB in size. Using the device's data connection will work, but it will take much longer depending on the connection. So, we recommend using Wi-Fi to download the update package. Once the download is complete, the actual installation procedure will take under 20 minutes to complete. After installing the files, the EVO 3D will restart and you will be all set with Ice Cream Sandwich on-board.

Chances exist that the auto-update procedure can fail and some users may not receive the update notification on the screen. In such a scenario, users can trigger manually update by navigating to Settings -> System updates -> HTC software update -> Check now from the EVO 3D.

Updating to Android 4.0 means an array of new features. Blame the older hardware, the ICS update package for Sprint does not include the infamous Sense 4.0 UI. Users have to be satisfied with HTC Sense 3.6 lying on the top of Android OS.

The update brings following features to the device, along with updating it to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

  •  Home screen folders
  •  Launch Bar for commonly used apps
  •  Improved Android browser
  •  Improved camera experience
  •  Face Unlock
  •  Resizable widgets
  •  Add/Remove panels

HTC and Sprint projected the July-August time period for the EVO 3D to get the latest iteration of Ice Cream Sandwich. Last month, Sprint also confirmed that the update is on track and will reach HTC EVO 3D early-August. It appears that Sprint did the job a day ahead of the scheduled date.
