While there are countless video games based on the Cthulhu mythos created by H.P. Lovecraft, the upcoming "Call of Cthulhu" title seems promising. A trailer called "Depths of Madness" was recently released to promote the video game, which is slated for a 2017 release.

Eurogamer has released the official synopsis for "Call of Cthulhu" and it reads: "A Private Detective, Edward Pierce is a mission to find the truth behind the death of an acclaimed artist and her family on a backwater island. Pierce is used to trusting his instincts, but with whale mutilations and disappearing bodies, this is only the beginning as reality becomes skewed.

As your investigation leads you closer to the sphere of influence of the Great Dreamer, you will start to doubt everything you see. You will have to find balance between your own sanity, and your determination in finding out what lurks in the shadows - as they say that madness is the only way that can bring you to the truth.

On a mission to find the truth behind the death of an acclaimed artist and her family on a backwater island, the player will soon uncover a more disturbing truth as the Great Dreamer, Cthulhu, prepares its awakening..."

The upcoming game will feature "psychological horror and stealth mechanics." Cyanide Studio's "Call of Cthulhu" is slated for a 2017 release for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Den of Geek has added that despite the slew of Cthulhu-based games, only a handful of them have been true to Lovecraft's works. However, if the trailer "is any indication," the upcoming "Call of Cthulhu" might have a "good gothic atmosphere" that will hopefully please even the most hardcore gamers and Lovecraft fans. Cyanide, the team behind "Call of Cthulhu," has previously worked on "Blood Bowl," a fantasy football video game.
