For months, the iPhone 8 is bombarded with speculations about its upcoming features. Rumors online state that the Apple flagship would feature a flexible OLED screen that provides a brighter display and power efficiency.
However, BGR reports that Japan Display, who is currently making flat LCD panels for Apple, announced that starting next year, the manufacturing company will mass-produce bendable LCD screens for iPhones.
JDI's flexible LCD screens will use plastic instead of glass. Thus, making the smartphone bendable. However, Japan Display CFO Shuji Aruga stated that the LCD bendable screen won't be much flexible as the OLED panels.
Aruga added that the feature might be flexible enough to be used in Galaxy Edge-like designs. The materials use to make a bendable LCD iPhone 8 would also be less expensive as it does not require substantial investments in new production.
The Japan Display CFO further stated that mass production is planned to start from 2018. Apple and Huawei are both the manufacturers' largest costumers. But there is still no official confirmation from either of the companies
Samsung Display will be the main beneficiary of Apple's OLED orders this year. LG Display and Foxconn's Sharp are also expected to manufacture OLED displays for the Cupertino tech giant in the future.
In other news, Apple is looking to develop a better version of Siri. According to Forbes, the Cupertino-based company is starting to make noises about AI, since both Google's Assistant and Alexa are spreading to other non-mobile devices.
The news outlet suggested that Apple should focus on what Alexa and Assistant are currently lacking. Adjust settings with voice commands, ordering items without subscription, monetize and expand support for third-party apps are some of the major issues that is not found in both AI programs.
If Apple can produce a genuine, useful voice app that people can integrate into their daily lives, then the disadvantage of being late to market will shrink drastically.
