Rare and Microsoft's 'Sea of Thieves' Could Be Full Of 'Swashbuckling Fun'

Despite the cancellation of Microsoft's "Scalebound," it looks the company is still working on other titles such as "Sea of Thieves." "Sea of Thieves" is a "co-operative pirate action-adventure game" that will soon be released for Microsoft PC and the Xbox One.

According to Digital Trends, developer Rare ("Star Fox Adventures," "Killer Instinct") is collaborating with publisher Microsoft Studios for "Sea of Thieves." In the upcoming game, players will "assume the role of pirates in a shared online world full of treasure and adventure." Players must work as a team to run a ship as they sail the high seas "in search of swashbuckling fun."

Rare's "Sea of Thieves" was first unveiled at E3 2015, and the game will allow players to create their own in-game pirate avatar that can be customized. Players can select their avatar's "gender, physique, appearance, and outfits." To emphasize the importance of skills over stats, "Sea of Thieves" will not be implementing a class system.

In "Sea of Thieves," the titular sea will allegedly take at least six to eight hours to fully explore. Each region will have its own theme such as "a classic Caribbean environment" or a wilderness with remnants of a lost civilization. Gamers will be facing all sorts of enemies such as "skeletons and krakens" in Rare's upcoming title.

The game will also feature quests and several "smaller stories" that can be wrapped up in "one or two sessions." As a game about pirates, "Sea of Thieves" will also have treasure that can be found using maps.

While technically not a "game over," players can still "die" in the game. However, players can also "convince the captain of the ferry to send them back to the living," but only after completing certain tasks for Davy Jones.

Meanwhile. ThisGenGaming has called Rare and Microsoft's "Sea of Thieves" a "hidden treasure" that could be the latter's saving grace in 2017. The upcoming action-adventure game from Rare and Microsoft Studios will head to the PC and Xbox One sometime this year.
