Samsung Galaxy S9 Could Have The 7nm Chipsets; Samsung Gearing Up To Become Top Chipmaker
Ritwik RoySamsung Galaxy S8 is not yet released and rumors about a Samsung Galaxy S9 are already doing rounds. The reason is for this the alleged 7nm chip that Samsung will reportedly produce from 2018. It is believed that the Galaxy S9 flagship will have the 7nm chip and thus will be more energy efficient compared to handsets that use or will use the Snapdragon 835 processor built on the 10nm FeT technology. In order to aid the production process of the 7nm chipsets, Samsung will introduce extreme ultraviolet exposure (EUV) equipment.
"We will maximize the advantages of EUV in the 7-nanometer process and secure competitiveness in terms of performance and power consumption," managing director of Samsung LSI Divison, Dr. Heo Kuk, told a Korean website, reports Android Authority.
If these 7nm chips go into production early 2018, then they will be incorporated by Samsung into its flagship Galaxy S9. However, Samsung's semiconductor rival TSMC, has stated that it is planning to start producing the 7nm chips in quarter two of 2017 and the Apple iPhone 9 may have them in 2018. Samsung announced the mass production of the 10nm chipsets in November 2016 and they will be used in the 2017 flagship. As a result, the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor.
It is a tough game for Samsung as the competition gets fierce. Chipset makers are readying themselves for the most-efficient manufacturing process and as TSMC makes chips only for Apple, Samsung could be one of the top contenders to carve a niche in the chip market, reports Tech Times. The 7nm chip in Samsung Galaxy S9 may secure the South Korean tech giant's chances of becoming a top chipmaker via power consumption and performance. Stay tuned on Mobile & Apps for more updates on the 7nm chips in Galaxy S9.
