What We Know About Microsoft's Project Scorpio, The 'Most Powerful Console Ever'
S. TurlaMicrosoft has claimed that Project Scorpio, or the upcoming revamped Xbox One, will be "the most powerful console ever." Should the company deliver, the Xbox Scorpio's competition could be blown out of the water.
On paper, the Project Scorpio's specs are in a league of its own, per Entertainment Weekly. Xbox Scorpio aims to deliver "native or near-native 4K visuals" along with "raw crunch power." The upcoming console will be a "gaming behemoth," and it could outclass Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro by "sizable margins."
Xbox Scorpio will come with an unspecified 8-core AMD processor, "possibly something based on AMD's new Ryzen/Zen tech if rumors out of CES 2017 are credible), 320 GB per second of memory bandwidth, and a graphics processor that can hit 6 teraflops of performance.
The Xbox Scorpio will allegedly hit retail shelves by late 2017, just in time for the holidays. However, the console won't come with an affordable price tag. In August 2016, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One S, the console's "revamped slimline model," and it was sold for $299.
Gamers were also promised that titles that work with the Xbox One will also be compatible with Xbox Scorpio, but there are no guarantees that this includes peripheral devices such as VR tech. Microsoft's upcoming console also aims to appeal to gaming enthusiasts who want to experience 4K without shelling out $1,000 or more for high-end PCs. Xbox Scorpio could also herald the end of console generations.
According to Tech Radar, while Microsoft still hasn't disclosed the price for the upcoming console. Project Scorpio will cost more than the Xbox One and the Xbox One S. Since Project Scorpio isn't focusing on VR, the company "doesn't have its own VR headset" and it appears that it "won't be developing its own" at the moment. The company has also promised that gamers can enjoy an "improved gaming experience" with Xbox Scorpio's "more powerful components."
