PS4 Pro Boost Mode Could Have A Negative Effect On The Fighting Game Community

The PS4 Pro Boost Mode is gradually creating an impact in the gaming world. The popular Boost Mode, however, could have negative implications in the world of FGC.

The PS4 Pro Boost Mode unlocks the power of the Pro to unpatched base PS4 titles. This enables games to make use of the extra processing power of the 4K-enabled Pro machine, in CPU and GPU terms.

PS4 Pro Boost Mode is designed for games that a developer has not issued a PS4 Pro patch for. The patch instructs the game on exactly how and where to use the extra power. When the PS4 Pro Boost Mode was confirmed in testing, the popular "Street Fighter V" has been loading so much faster using PS4 Pro Boost Mode. This leads to players wondering how much time is saved on the average in a fighting game event.

"Street Fighter V" is running on PS4 Pro Boost Mode at an average of about 3.4 seconds of loading saved per match, reports farisr on NeoGAF. These 3.4 seconds conservatively added over the course of a conservative 1000 matches per tournament is about 3400 seconds saved collectively (or approximately about an hour). This will just be multiplied if it is used in larger events.

If PS4 Pro Boost Mode can save one frame in a game, it would put it in line with Ultra Street Fighter IV's input lag of five frames. In addition, if more stages can now be used, the issues about the game always using the Training Stage at events would be unlikely.

If in case, FGC organizers were to upgrade, the problem then becomes one of cost, especially for companies that are the source of these FGC events. The cost of obtaining all new PS4 Pro's would create higher rental prices for events. Increased rental costs would then most likely lead FGC organizers trying to recover their costs somewhere else, like increasing venue fees or tournament entry fees, says PVP Live.
